When colleagues ask my husband what I do for work, he says “I make people get rid of stuff and then I put stuff in boxes”. And while his response almost always gets a laugh, there is a lot more to professional organizing that you might see on a reality TV show.

Decluttering and organizing is time-consuming, and if you take on yourself, it’s all too easy to lose momentum along the way, leaving you more overwhelmed than before. As a relatively new industry, many people still don’t understand what a professional organizer does, or how they can help you.

What is a Professional Organizer?

The New York Times states:

“A professional organizer is a person who can help you organize any of the physical and digital spaces in your life — a closet, a kitchen or a home office. She (and it’s almost always a she) will offer support for decision-making, facilitate actions around the removal of unwanted belongings, and set up systems, from shelving to labels, that help her clients establish order and clarity.”

Some organizers will create an organized system, but don’t focus on decluttering. However, this type of system is bound to fail. You may be organized, but you have organized clutter. Other professional organizers, like I do, focus decluttering first. Only after you have eliminating the things that you don’t use or need do they get put into a system.

Professional organizers will work along side of you to help you decide what to keep and guide you to determine what to get rid of. Organizers are respectful and nonjudgmental of your items, but you might hear some hard truths about the need to let things go.


Professional Organizers Create Customized Solutions

Just like how no home is the same, there isn’t a one-sized-fits-all way organizing solution. Those cute baskets you see at Target or that beautiful closet system might not work for your home or your lifestyle. A well-trained organizer will examine your routines and discuss your lifestyle, and design an organizing system that is both functional, beautiful, and tailored for you and your home.

They work with their clients to determine what activities are done in the particular space, what the space’s purpose is, and then set up the space in a way that can be easily maintained- allowing you to stay organized long after the professional organizer is gone.

Professional are familiar with organizing products- the bins and baskets and products to help keep things tidy, and can tell you which ones will work best for your home- and which ones you don’t need!


Professional Organizers aren’t Magicians!

Getting organized can have magical results. But, you can’t expect to hire an organizer then come home after the end of the day and have your home be sparkling clean and color coded! While some organizers may do work without you, for lasting change, you’ll need to work alongside them. Think of your organizer is a guide, the Mr. Miyagi to the Karate Did or Dumbledore to Harry (or, you can think of your own non-nerdy example!)

It also takes time. An organizer can’t wave a magic wand and suddenly the clutter is gone. It takes time to sort through belongings, and while an organizer will come up with solutions, you also have to put in the hard work of deciding what items to keep.
